Program Description

Summer Reading Activities

Summer Reading Activities are "extras" - programs, presentations, and special events hosted by the library - designed to complement the reading goals of our annual summer reading challenges.  Participating in these special programs earns additional badges in Beanstack and additional tickets for the ticket drawing prizes!

For Secret Code Word activities, be sure to look for the sign with the secret code word or ask a library staff member during the program!

Meet Tiger!

Tiger is our Summer Reading Activity mascot!  Any time you see Tiger on something advertising a Read, Renew, Repeat event or program, it means that event will give you additional badges and tickets!

A cartoon tiger is standing on his hind legs. He is wearing a t-shirt and a ball cap and holding a shovel.

The Magic of Joel Shoemaker

Anyone can make something vanish, but the REAL trick is to make the missing object reappear.  We are working our own magic and bringing back our former Library Director for one afternoon only!

Joel will perform his award-winning magic as part of our summer reading program!  Join us for a funny and fun-filled afternoon!

About Joel Shoemaker

Joel Shoemaker has been a magician for more than thirty years, performing all across the country for children and adults, in theaters, libraries, and at private functions for individuals, groups, and even a few celebrities!  His magic has won awards at numerous local and state competitions.  He was the first resident from Champaign County to place at the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs talent competition.  Joel has studied in Las Vegas with master card manipulator, Jeff McBride.

Outside of magic, he majored in Elementary Education and minored in Theatre Arts and Drama at Eureka College, and has a Master's in Library and Information Science from Dominican University.  Joel is an accomplished actor, frequently appearing onstage in community theater productions in Central Illinois.  He will expand his community theater involvement by directing for Corn Stock Theatre and Eureka College next year.  By day, Joel is the Associate Director of Library Services for Methodist College in Peoria.
